Maura Moynihan & Murphy Bear

Through children's books and interactive storytelling, Maura Moynihan combines tennis, education, fitness, health and fun to introduce young children to the game of tennis.

Introducing Children to Tennis

As a former elementary school teacher, Maura Moynihan saw a need for children's picture books about tennis in the early 1990s. She was also concerned about the rise in childhood obesity and believed tennis could be a fun sport to help young children stay active and fit.

While teaching youth tennis classes, Maura wanted picture books that could help introduce children to tennis. Because very few were available, she decided to create her own books and work with an illustrator.

Maura also recognized the connection between reading and childhood development. Reading to children at a young age helps build literacy, while tennis provides an opportunity for children and families to enjoy an active sport together.

Murphy Bear

While raising her son and daughter, Maura's writing journey began. Over the years, the Murphy Bear character became the heart of her children's tennis stories.

Murphy Bear's Tennis Lesson and Murphy the Tennis Bear Visits the US Open introduced young readers to tennis through entertaining stories and colorful illustrations.

Murphy Bear children's tennis books

Tennis Wonders of the World with Murphy Bear was published in 2019.

The books use entertaining stories and bright illustrations to introduce children to the world of tennis while weaving together education, fun, fitness and health.

Beginner tennis instruction is also incorporated into the stories, helping young readers become familiar with the game while enjoying the adventures of Murphy Bear and his friends.

Maura's latest book, Murphy Bear Coaches Little Tennis, was released in 2025.

The book continues Maura's mission of making tennis approachable and enjoyable for young children by combining storytelling with an introduction to the fundamentals of the sport.
